Aussie farm claims mud crab breeding success

AUSTRALIA - A Northern Territory aqua farm says it has won a worldwide race to be the first to breed mud crabs from eggs to full maturity.

The Darwin Aquaculture Centre says the key to the achievement has been developing the right type of algae which is pumped from temperature controlled tanks into the crab ponds.

Aqua-scientist Glenn Schipp says the centre will be able to produce more mud crabs to meet Australian demand and it should also be able to enter the lucrative South-East Asian market.
