Fiji's aquaculture sector is mainly comprised of pearl, freshwater prawn, tilapia, and seaweed farming, reports ShanghaiDaily.
Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) aquaculture adviser Robert Jimmy said it is difficult to know aquaculture's exact value because farms are spread out in remote rural areas.
"Often there is no single farm harvest. Instead there are many partial harvests of small quantities of fish that go unrecorded. This makes it difficult to accurately represent aquaculture value among that of other industries, and to obtain support for aquaculture development," he told the newspaper.
He said SPC consultations with member governments had highlighted the systematic collection of aquaculture statistics as one area that needed much improvement to demonstrate the true worth of aquaculture within Pacific island economies.
