Aquaculture will be one of the four main areas of discussion, with trade, seafood consumers, and Brexit also on the agenda at the annual event.
Four industry experts will take to the stage to focus on different elements of aquaculture, providing a platform for information sharing and the discussion of opportunities.
Food Future LLC CEO Scott Nichols will begin the aquaculture session with his speech “Feeding the world: why is aquaculture so important?”
His presentation will be followed by Seafish Industry Board Member Jonathan Shepherd whose speech is entitled “The Blue Revolution: a veterinary perspective”.
CEFAS (Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science) Director Grant Stentiford will focus on one of the real challenges in the sector in his presentation “New paradigms to deal with the global aquaculture disease crisis”.
Martin Jaffa of Callander McDowell closes the aquaculture session with a detailed look at public perceptions about aquaculture.
His presentation “What does the consumer really think about farmed fish?” will look at the results of opinion polls which reveal findings about what the general public’s opinions about aquaculture are.
All four presentations will tackle the major issues and opportunities in aquaculture and offer those in attendance unique insight into the sector.
Seafish CEO Marcus Coleman said: “Aquaculture is an area of particular focus at this year’s summit and it is a really interesting area for us with a lot of potential for the future. I am pleased to see that this year we have set up the Seafish Domestic Aquaculture Advisory Committee and I am detecting an increased interest in aquaculture in the UK with lots of different stakeholders talking about the potential for it.
“Clearly there are a lot of barriers in the way, not least water quality and availability of sites. Having discussions at conferences like the Humber Seafood Summit help to raise awareness of these issues and forms an important part of the journey towards securing the conditions that would make aquaculture a more sustainable proposition in the UK.”
Aquaculture is the final session at the Humber Seafood Summit. The other sessions are entitled “UK Seafood: supply and demand” and “UK seafood consumer and trade”. There will also be a Brexit panel discussion.
The Humber Seafood Summit will be held on Wednesday, September 28 at The Pier, Cleethorpes. A Seafood Fayre will take place on Tuesday, September 27 at Humber Royal, Grimsby.
