Aquaculture farming sites to be opened

PUTRAJAYA: Thirty-nine aquaculture-farming sites that require investments worth RM2bil will be opened up to local and foreign investors early next year.

Agriculture and Agro-Based Industries Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said those interested in such farming activities could contact the ministry with their proposals.

“The ministry has identified 25,000ha in 39 locations throughout the country for aquaculture farming,” he said, adding that those interested could contact the ministry for further details.

Muhyiddin said as an incentive to investors the Government would provide the basic infrastructure such as roads, irrigation channels and power supply to the farming sites.

He said a total of RM2bil in investments was needed to open the areas for among others fish, prawn, seaweed, cockle, and ornamental fish rearing.

He also urged state governments, where the farming sites are located, to provide attractive land lease terms and rates.

“We seek the co-operation of the state governments to charge reasonable land lease rates and offer a lease tenure of 30 years or more,” he said, after meeting state executive councillors and ministers holding the agriculture and agro-based industries portfolio.
