Aquaculture Catches on at Hutterville Colony

US - The Hutterville Colony near Stratford in South Dakota has a crop that cannot be hit by hail storms, drought or flooding.

According to reports on KTIV, the colony began fish farming about 15 months ago raising tilapia in 32 tanks.

The colony now raises about 390 tonnes of tilapia a year.

Colony members monitor the water closely for temperature and acid content.

If a storm knocks out the electricity, the colony members need to start up alternate power sources quickly to keep the water circulating and maintain the temperature, the KITV report says.
