They discussed the potential impact on the animal feed market of the increased production of biofuels. A presentation from Julian Bell of the Scottish Agricultural College focused on this topic. Members noted that biofuel production was beginning to have a significant impact on, world food and feed markets. The Committee decided to seek the views of relevant organisations, to gain an understanding of the animal feed market, and the implications for food for human consumption.
The Committee also heard a presentation from Ralph Bickerdike of BioMar on aquaculture. Mr Bickerdike gave some background to the UK’s aquaculture industry and outlined specific issues the industry was currently facing. Members were particularly interested in hearing how changes in the composition of fish feed were improving the sustainability of farmed fish for human consumption.
The previous day the Committee visited BioMar, the third biggest supplier of fish feed to the aquaculture industry. The Committee also visited Wellington Farm, a 320 sow pig-breeding unit on the outskirts of Edinburgh owned by Robin and Anna Traquair.
ACAF Open Meeting 20 June
UK - The Advisory Committee on Animal Feedingstuffs (ACAF) held its 38th meeting at the Sheraton Hotel in Edinburgh on 5 June 2007. Committee members discussed the impact of biofuels and aquaculture, and were updated on various EU matters.
