A Taste of Shetland for New Scottish Salmon CE

SCOTLAND, UK - The new Chief Executive of Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation (SSPO) had his first taste of Shetland recently where he met representatives from the islands major salmon farming companies.

During a two-day visit, Scott Landsburgh congratulated winners in the recent Scotland Food & Drink Highlands and Islands Food and Drink Awards, Scottish Sea Farms and Hjaltland Seafarms, as well as met with economic development representatives from Shetland Islands Council and officials at the NAFC Marine Centre.

Mr Landsburgh said: I have been very impressed by the enthusiasm of staff and the efforts of the award-winning companies who have demonstrated commitment to both producing high quality, healthy salmon and to protecting the environment.

As almost one in three Scottish salmon are farmed in Shetland, the islands clearly play a major role in the local and national food industry. I look forward to representing the views of local salmon farmers and to supporting the significant achievements of this successful sector, he added.

Host for the visit, David Sandison, Company Secretary of SSPO and General Manager of Shetland Aquaculture, added: I am delighted to welcome Scott to Shetland. It is appropriate that his visit is during our inaugural Food Festival as it is an ideal opportunity to celebrate Shetland salmon and its contribution to the sustainability of our community.

Scottish Sea Farms won the Healthier Food and Drink category for its Lochmuir Salmon brand and Hjaltland Seafarms scooped the Environment Award at the Scotland Food & Drink Highlands and Islands Food and Drink Awards held in Inverness on 26th September 2008.
