The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says Vase tunicate has now been found in Charlottetown Harbour, the West River and Nine Mile Creek. The pest has been causing problems in eastern PEI for several years.
The tunicate doesn't pose any threat to human health, but it does make harvesting shellfish more difficult and expensive. It can also slow the growth of shellfish by competing for food.
About three dozen growers may be affected.
