Salmon nets 197m for Scottish business

UK - Salmon farming generates more than 197m a year for Scottish businesses, a new survey of producers has claimed.

The findings reveal that businesses in the Highlands and Islands are the most significant beneficiaries, netting around £149m per annum.

Other Scottish regions benefit from a further £48m boost, the rest of the UK gains £50m and overseas £5m, according to the Scottish Salmon Producers' Organisation (SSPO) survey.

The total annual expenditure on suppliers of goods and services tops £253m, the SSPO said.

The Highlands and Islands also benefit the most by the volume of businesses that supply the industry, with some 77 per cent of suppliers based in the region.
