Russia to double per capita fish consumption

MURMANSK - Russia is planning to double the average per capita consumption of fish products within the coming five to six years Andrei Krainy, head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries (Rosrybolovstvo) has stated.

We are going to double the average per capital consumption of fish products by Russians in five to six years from the current 12 kilograms to 23 kilograms. The gross output of the fishing industry will also be doubled, he said. The amount of fish products is to be increased, and their price should be more available for the population. This is the main purpose of our work.

Krainy outined the key tasks for the near future development of aquaculture. Aquaculture accounts for only 100,000 tons of fish products, while Russias population is some 145 million. China produces in this way tens of millions of tons of fish products. The present situation with aquaculture in Russia is at variance with the natural potential of the country. Its output of fish products continues to be small, Krainy said.

Minister of Agriculture Alexei Gordeyev, who is to chair a meeting of the Interdepartmental Working Group for the implementation of the national project 'Development of the agro-industrial complex,' said that the development of commercial fish breeding is a promising direction, and the opportunities of business should be used more extensively for improving its efficiency.
