Research backed for oyster industry
AUSTRALIA - Wallis Lake oyster farmers have welcomed two Federal Government grants totalling just under $1 million, which will fund two vital research projects.
The funding from the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation will help Queensland Museum researcher Dr Rob Adlard with his work on the identification of host interactions in the life cycle of QX disease.
The disease decimated oyster production in the Hawkesbury River after first being diagnosed in the upper reaches of the river in June 2004.
While $418,896, along with a further $140,000 contribution from the NSW oyster industry will help fund NSW Department of Primary Industries' research, led by Dr Wayne O'Connor, aimed at securing and enhancing the Sydney rock oyster breeding program in NSW.
