EHP is currently seriously impacting on the economics of shrimp farming and, according to reports from Malaysia, it is reported to be slowing growth by as much as 50 per cent, which is adversely impacting on the shrimp industry.
Many commercial shrimp hatcheries are now also suffering from EHP infection.
Unfortunately there is no reliable data on the impact of EHP on shrimp growth rates, or on the economics of shrimp grow-out culture, said Don Griffiths, FVG Asia.
The parasite life cycle of EHP is still largely unknown and requires further research. As of yet there are no treatment methods available for ponds with live shrimp in to eradicate the microsporidian parasite. Additionally the efficacy of different disinfection products against EHP is still to be verified, he continued.
FVG Asia Ltd is therefore trying to gather data from the field on the impact of EHP to shrimp hatcheries and shrimp grow-out farms for the benefit of the shrimp sector.
