PERU - It is predicted that aquaculture production in Peru could triple thanks to the government-implemented measures to consolidate the Aquaculture Technological Innovation Centers (CITE).

Peruvian Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Juan Carlos Requejo, indicated that over S/.71 million ($22.32 million) will be invested to establish the Lima Aquaculture CITE, reports Andina.

It will be linked to five technical units based in the regions of Puno, Piura, Ica, Ancash and San Martin.

Within the framework of the National Plan for Productive Diversification, the government aims to relaunch the Peruvian aquaculture sector, since it can turn into one of the country's engines for economic growth.

The sector’s potential is huge in Peru. Currently, less than five per cent of fishing output comes from aquaculture activities, whereas it accounts for nearly 50 per cent in other nations.
