Northern prawn industry makes full recovery

AUSTRALIA - The Federal Government says smaller nets, less boats and shorter fishing seasons have resulted in a complete recovery of the Northern Prawn Fishery.

In 2000, tiger prawns were found to be overfished, leading to a massive reduction in fishing across northern Australia.

While there are reports that the first month of this season have been poor, Northern Prawn Industry CEO Annie Jarratt says they are hopeful the fishery will now survive.

He said that the fishery's still faced with some fairly big challenges as the exchange rate and the high price of fuel is causing economic hardship.
