Aquaculture for all

Locals Oppose Port Neill Farms

AUSTRALIA - Towns' folk are strongly opposing Port Neill's prospects for more aquaculture. Residents do not want fish farms in their waters says local lobbyist Tom Bagshaw.

He has already mounted a campaign conveying his strong message and has sent out fliers to locals encouraging them to attend the proposal meetings, reports the Port Lincoln News. Many oppose the Primary Industries and Resources SA proposal for a finfish and shellfish zone at Port Neill. The private companies can apply to place leases in this area for fish farming.

Bagshaw said aquaculture could ruin the quiet tourist town. Te main concern is a new infrastructure, built for bigger boats and damage it may cause to the pristine environment. He believes tourists will be put off by the fishing activity.
