Aquaculture has been around for approximately 4,000 years, compared with about 12,000 years for agriculture. Despite such a long history, there remains today a range of challenges, including disease, for both terrestrial and aquatic farming.
This webinar, hosted by TheFishSite Editor Lucy Towers and presented by Dr Longshaw, will therefore briefly consider some of the historical reports of disease under aquaculture conditions and a background to the main types of aquaculture globally.
Although the focus will be on salmonid aquaculture, examples of parasite infections in other fish species as well as those affecting molluscs and crustaceans, will be presented.
The webinar will provide information on parasite lifecycles, their impact at an individual, farm and ecosystem level, current treatments as well as consideration of potential new and novel diseases in aquaculture.

Dr Longshaw is a Product Development Manager for Fish Vet Group Ltd and its sister company Benchmark Animal Health Ltd. Prior to joining FVG / BAHL, he worked as a senior research scientist for over 20 years for the British Government where he headed up the Population Health and Welfare team.
With an honours degree in Biological Sciences (Marine and Fish Biology), a Masters in Marine and Fisheries Science and a PhD in Aquatic Parasitology, Dr Longshaw has an excellent knowledge of parasitic infections in wild and farmed aquatic species with a particular interest in diseases of shellfish. He has published extensively and is an elected fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and of the Society of Biology.
