The scheme in its modified form is to make way for focused development and management of the fisheries sector to increase both fish production and fish productivity from aquaculture, as well as inland and marine fisheries sector including deep sea fishing.
The restructured Central Sector Scheme on Blue Revolution, called “Integrated Development and Management of Fisheries”, envisages modernisation of the fisheries sector with special focus on new technologies while ensuring food and nutritional security through inclusive development and empowerment of fishers and aquaculture farmers.
It also has an added component to strengthen database and geographical information system of the fisheries sector.
Through its various programmes, the government aims to enhance India’s fish production to 15 million tonnes (Mt) by 2019-20 from the current volume of about 10.79 Mt.
This, while adding to country’s export earnings, is to create scope the fishers and fish farmers to attain the target of doubling their income, a release by agriculture ministry said.
In February 2016, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that his government would double the income of farmers by 2022.
