Fisheries sector moves to fulfil tasks for 2007

VIETNAM - Over the past nine months, the fisheries sector netted 2.7 million tonnes of aquatic products and earned US$2.325 million from exports, fulfilling 78.4 percent of the yearly plan. However, the sectors production value was lower than the figure a year ago.

Experts attributed the low production value to the soaring fuel prices, natural calamities and weaknesses in businesses’ operations and the Ministry of Fisheries (MoF) management.

MoF Minister Ta Quang Ngoc has asked MoF agencies to make a list of eligible seafood producers and exporters as well as potential export products in the fourth quarter of this year so as to draw up proper development plans.

According to Mr Ngoc, MoF agencies will help farmers and producers waive improper fees, reduce post-harvest losses, intensify food safety and hygiene measures and expand key overseas outlets.
