First major marine farm on New Zealand's West Coast gets go-ahead

NEW ZEALAND - The Ministry of Fisheries says it is confident a major marine farm development approved in south Westland will not have a detrimental effect on the environment.</b> <br><br> The 45ha mussel farm, which is the first of its kind on the West Coast, will be based in Jackson Bay, near Haast. <br><br> The ministry&#39;s aquaculture manager, Daniel Lees, says the application was thoroughly investigated by the ministry, West Coast Regional Council, and the Environment Court. <br><br> He says while mussel farms can affect local marine environments, this one should be fine. <br><br> <i>Source: Radio New Zealand</i>
