Fisheries management advisor of the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency, Ian Freeman, said the policy would be an overarching one for the fisheries sector in Fiji, reports the FijiTimes.
"Fiji would become one of the first countries in the Pacific that actually have a National Fisheries Policy and that gives direction and clear objectives to all three sectors, namely aquaculture, the inshore fishery and the offshore fishery," Mr Freeman said.
"They're all going basically in the same direction trying to achieve the same objective which is to allow development, allow job opportunities but at the same time getting the balance of having a healthy ecosystem, sustainably-managed fisheries and well-managed fish stock."
The stakeholders are expected to finalise the national policy by tomorrow after the two-day meet.
