Control Tightened on Chemicals and Antibiotics in Vietnamese Food Production

VIETNAM - The Prime Minister has issued an instruction to tighten control of the use of chemicals and antibiotics in food production.

According to the instruction, dated Oct. 28, all the chemicals and antibiotics that are banned from use in food are also banned from use in agriculture and aquaculture.

Medicines for humans and chemicals for industries cannot be used to treat and prevent diseases in animals, and veterinary medicines for terrestrial species cannot be used to treat aquatic species and vice versa. The instruction warns against the abuse of chemicals in food crop cultivation while encouraging the application of biotechnology.

The PM required relevant agencies to promote the dissemination of information on food hygiene standards of Viet Nam and the world to producers and consumers, while strengthening the supervision of the production, distribution and export of food
