CFP Reform Package To Be Launched In July

Politics

EU - The Commission plans to have the proposal for a new Common Fisheries Policy ready on 13 July, fisheries commissioner Maria Damanaki told the European Parliaments fisheries committee on Monday.

The reform package will go to inter-service consultation within the Commission next week with the goal of having it ready for decision when the commissioners meet on 13 July, Ms Damanaki said. After that date, the proposal will go to the Parliament and Council.

Ms Damanaki presented this schedule during a meeting in the fisheries committee which was dedicated to a discussion on the Commission’s work programme for fisheries.

During the meeting, Ms Damanaki was faced with many questions regarding the stalemate on long-term management plans. Such plans for several fish stocks are pending since the Council has been reluctant to involve the Parliament in the decision making process. Ms Damanaki announced that she has called a meeting with the Commission, Council and Parliament on 19 April to find a solution regarding the long-term management plans.

Both Alain Cadec (EPP) and João Ferreira (GUE/NGL) asked the commissioner how she plans to help fishermen facing increasing fuel prices. “We will not have a new funding tool for fuel,” Ms Damanaki replied. She said that the Commission will propose a simpler funding instrument, which will provide no more money for increasing the capacity of vessels.
