B.C. Fish Farm Committee Hits The Road
BRITISH COLUMBIA - The B.C. government's NDP-controlled fish farming committee hits the road in June, making stops in a string of coastal communities to hear the public's views on building a sustainable aquaculture industry.
Giving the NDP a majority on the committee was an unprecedented gesture by the B.C. Liberal government, but the spirit of cooperation dimmed last month when the agriculture ministry issued a new fish farm licence to a Norwegian company in the Broughton Archipelago.
The licence calls for the operator to shut down its open net pens when sea lice or other farmed salmon hazards may pose a threat to migrating wild salmon.
