Aquaculture industry still lagging behind in SA

SOUTH AFRICA - Natural fish and other seafood stocks are plummeting from over exploitation, pollution and climate change.

While aquaculture has taken off around the world, the industry is still lagging behind in South Africa. Now government is meeting with all stakeholders to address fish farming and discuss the industry's draft policy at a marine aquaculture workshop in the Eastern Cape.

Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food production systems. Yet Africa, with all its resources, makes up less than 1% of global production, with South Arica only contributing 1% of the continent's production.

The department has turned to six other countries as examples of where aquaculture has succeeded.
