Albacore Tuna Harvesters Develop Global Markets

CANADA - The Government of Canada is investing almost $24,000 in the Canadian Highly Migratory Species Foundation (CHMSF) to help increase market shares for albacore tuna, announced Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz.

"Whether fresh, frozen, or canned, Canadian albacore tuna is as popular as it is nutritious," said Minister Ritz. "Our Government is pleased to help this industry enhance its competitiveness in world markets."

CHMSF will use this investment to develop global market opportunities for Canadian products and promote the Canada Brand by developing promotional material and attending industry trade shows in regions such as Europe and Asia. The CHMSF represents the interests of 240 members of the West Coast tuna fleet and as well as processors of fresh, frozen and canned albacore tuna.

"The support of the AgriMarketing Fund gave our Foundation our first opportunity to expand our marketing strategy to an international market," said Lorne Clayton, Executive Director of the CHMSF. "As a direct result, we are currently in discussions with potential buyers in Germany, France, Spain, Japan, China, and Dubai who are keenly interested in our Marine Stewardship Certified-Platinum Quality-Canadian Albacore Tuna products."

This federal investment is provided through the $88 million AgriMarketing program, under Growing Forward, which helps industry associations implement long-term international strategies which include activities such as international market development, consumer awareness and branding and industry-to-industry trade advocacy.
