Abalone Council wants farm review as disease spreads
TASMANIA - The Abalone Council of Tasmania has renewed calls for a review of abalone farms, as a deadly disease continues to spread towards Tasmania.
Parts of a Bass Strait fishery will be closed next week in a bid to stop the herpes-like disease reaching it.
Ganglioneuritis was found in Victorian abalone farms early this year and is continuing to spread east.
The president of Tasmania's Abalone Council, Dean Lisson, wants abalone farm and processors' effluent handling examined.
"Part of our discussions will consider the possible further treatment of effluent to reduce the risk of bacterial or viral infections travelling from abalone farms into the wild," he said.
