69,000 hectares proposed for aquaculture, says Rahim

MALAYSIA - Agriculture and Food Industry Minister, Datuk Abdul Rahim Ismail, said the country is expected to produce 1.93 million metric tonnes of fish worth RM9.4 billion by the year 2010.

Of the volume, the fresh water fish industry could contribute 600,000 metric tonnes worth RM4 billion.

He pointed that the contribution of the aquaculture industry had been very encouraging that would prompt the Fisheries Department to expand the industry, with 69,000 hectares proposed for aquaculture.

He said this while opening a State-level seminar on Fresh Water Fish and Decorative Fish at the community centre, here, Sunday.

Rahim said fresh water commodities are quality species like tilapia merah, tilapia hitam, carp, patin, lampan jawa and keli (catfish) that have a high global market demand.
