Standards for Tilapia Aquaculture Up for Discussion

WORLDWIDE - Draft standards for certifying tilapia aquaculture products, and a possible timeline for their introduction, will be mooted at WWF's Tilapia Aquaculture Dialogue on 27 February 2008.

The meeting will be held during the International Boston Seafood Show where delegates will have the opportunity to learn more about the International Social and Environmental Accreditation and Labeling (ISEAL) Alliance requirements.

The Dialogue Steering Committee hopes the draft standards will be posted for public comment within the next few months. They hope to finalise the draft by November and given to a new or existing third-party certification entity to manage.

“The tilapia Steering Committee is fully focused on addressing the concerns from all the stakeholders,” said Alfonso Delfini, executive vice president of Aquamar SA. “Despite the arduous process, the committee will not dismay until the standards reflect and address all these issues in an effective and simple manner."

Aquamar is one of six bodies represented on the Dialogue’s Steering Committee. Other organisations represented include Regal Springs, Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, New England Aquarium, Rain Forest Aquaculture and World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
