Qld aquaculture company fined

AUSTRALIA - A north Queensland aquaculture company and its director each have been fined $45,000 for breaching an environmental protection order.

Australian Aquaculture Co Pty Ltd and director Peter Marchesin were convicted and fined in the Cairns Magistrates Court for failing to prevent erosion and sediment runoff at the company's facility in Speewah, near Cairns.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued the protection order on June 2 last year, requiring the company to carry out certain works at its facility.

But EPA Northern Region director of environment, Rob Lawrence, said the company failed to comply.

"The order was issued after EPA inspections of the facility found sediment runoff from the site had entered a waterway on an adjacent property," Mr Lawrence said.
