Aquaculture for all

Mussel farm world class says Minister

AUSTRALIA - The State Government will allow a world-class mussel farm to develop in Twofold Bay, based on a set of strict conditions to protect the local environment.

NSW Minister for Primary Industries, Ian Macdonald, announced he had approved the expansion of the facility from 15.5 hectares to 49.5 hectares, after considering community submissions on the issue.

"This is part of the Government's plan to develop aquaculture along the NSW, as a vital means of easing the pressure on fish stocks," Mr Macdonald said.

"It follows 13 years of consultation between the local community, local council and State Government, starting from when the original mussel farming proposal was advertised in 1992.

"The Government has struck a balance between local jobs, industry, the environment and the economy.

"Based on detailed, independent assessments, I am satisfied the mussel farm does not pose a significant risk to the environment.
