Kenya: Disease Pushes Up Cost of Fish And Chicken

KENYA - Prices of chicken and fish have skyrocketed in most parts of the country as a result of the Rift Valley Fever.

In Nairobi, a spot check at City Market indicated that a kilo of chicken, which used to cost Sh200 now fetches more than Sh350.

Chicken legs which used to sell for Sh200 a kilo, now sell at Sh280 while the price of boneless breast has risen from Sh380 a kilo to Sh480.

Mr Jennings Amau who deals in fish, said a kilo of fillet, which used to sell at Sh260 was now Sh270.

Mr Amau said the supply of fish was low.

The price of beef has, however, stabilised at Sh200 a kilo in most selling points in the city centre, although demand had gone down drastically.

In Eldoret, chicken prices have gone up from Sh200 to Sh350.

Vegetable traders at the main market reported good business as demand for greens shot up.
