Fisheries official calls for improved fish farming plan

VIETNAM - Breeding higher quality catfish and lowering soil and water pollution in aquatic farming areas would ensure the future of the tra and basa catfish industry, a fisheries official has said.

Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Nguyen Thi Hong Minh, said the ministry needed a better master plan on catfish farming to prevent worsening environmental pollution and an unstable export market.

Minh spoke at a recent seminar in Can Tho City on tra and basa catfish breeding through 2010.
Nguyen Thanh Phuong, head of the Fisheries Faculty of Can Tho University, said the expansion of catfish farming had come at the expense of environmental pollution and high quality products.
Clean production technology was also important for sustainable development, Phuong said.
