EU Delagation Visit Algarve To Discuss Fishing Sector Funding

PORTUGAL - Delegation of 13 Eurodeputies of the Fishing Commission of the European Parliament (PE) to visit the Algarve 13th-15th September to learn of the problems in the fishing sector with a view to a better application of the Community funds, according to the European Parliament.

EU Delagation Visit Algarve To Discuss Fishing Sector Funding - PORTUGAL - Delegation of 13 Eurodeputies of the Fishing Commission of the European Parliament (PE) to visit the Algarve 13th-15th September to learn of the problems in the fishing sector with a view to a better application of the Community funds, according to the European Parliament.

The visit includes meetings with representatives of fishing associations, boat owners and of the aquaculture (fish farming) sector of the eastern and western Algarve and visits to the fish auction of Sagres and the centre of maritime investigation of the Algarve.

The objective of the visit is to evaluate the situation of the fishing sector in the Algarve, including the problems related with the increase in fuel costs and the necessity of lay-offs in the fleet, having as its ,backdrop an improved application of the new Community instrument of support to the sector - the European Fishing Fund (EFF) - for the period 2007/2013.

The new EFF, approved in June, has a total endowment of 3.8 thousand million euros for the next seven years, attributing 220 million euros to Portugal for the support of measures which can be co-financed with Community funds.

These measures include the laying off of boats, the modernisation of the existing fleet, fish farming, the renovation of fish auctions and fishing ports and the fish processing and canning industry.

The programme further includes a journey on a caravel to the fishing locations in the Algarve, with representatives of the Director General of Fishing and Aquaculture and of associations of fishermen and producers of the western Algarve, to which journalists are invited.
