Call For Eased Aquaculture Regulations

Crustaceans Politics +1 more

AUSTRALIA -A north Queensland prawn farmer says governments need to relax regulation on the industry in order for it to grow and develop.

Matt West from Australian Prawn Farms, south of Mackay, is one of 17 people around the country who have been selected for an industry leadership programme, reports ABC Rural.

He says Australian aquaculture has the most strict environmental regulations in the world and that is preventing growth in the sector.

Mr West says aquaculture is an untapped resource and is vital for the future of the broader seafood industry.

"With growing government regulations and the increasing pressures put on the fishing community, catch quotas and so forth, we'd be limited and with the increase in population we still need to feed an ever-growing demand for seafood especially in Australia where Australians love eating seafood," he said.

"Aquaculture will fill that void very nicely."
