The ministry is planning on establishing aqua delicacy hatcheries in Dreketi, Macuata as an alternative source of income for farmers in the area.
Interim Fisheries minister Joketani Cokanasiga said he has plans for prawn larvae, beache-de-mer and fish hatchery at Dreketi.
Dreketi has been earmarked because the mortality rate of establishing such hatcheries in Suva and Naduruloulou and shipping larvae across to Vanua Levu is high.
Meanwhile, jelly fish is next on the plan.
“November is the time when jelly fish will come up and I believe in Bua coast you just got to take the bucket out and take the jelly fish.
“The one that we have, the local one is about US$1 a kilo but the person that we are working together wants to develop a bigger strain of jelly fish, which will fetch about $5- 6 dollars a kg.
