UK - A major campaign aimed at conserving wild salmon stocks in Scotland's rivers by trying to close coastal netting stations was launched yesterday.
Natural antioxidants give feed the full organic stamp
UK - The Soil Association says it has reached its target of eliminating the use of synthetic antioxidants in its certified organic fish feeds. Only natural antioxidants are now permitted in its certified feeds and their ingredients.
Push to raise cod quota as one million tonnes of dead fish dumped each year
UK - Britain is to take on Brussels over fish quotas after it emerged that fishermen are being forced to dump nearly one million tonnes of dead fish into the North Sea each year.

Jellyfish attack wipes out fish farm

US - Not a drop of oil from the Nov. 7 spill reached the waters of Tomales Bay. Yet oyster growers in this corner of West Marin are getting the cold shoulder from customers convinced their favorite shellfish might be contaminated.

US - The state's fisheries department exceeded its goal by collecting 775,000 salmon eggs from Lake Oahe this fall.
Bush Administration Drops Effort to Ease Salmon Protections
US - The Bush administration has abandoned efforts pushed by the timber industry to allow more logging around salmon streams on Northwest national forests.
$371,400 grant for Catfish disease studies
US - The US Department of Agriculture has awarded more than $371,400 to Missippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine to study enteric septicemia, or ESC. Researchers believe a modified live vaccine against the disease could dramatically reduce economic losses to catfish farmers.

US - Farm-raised catfish processed during October 2007 totaled 45.9 million pounds round weight, down 10 percent

Aquaculture only way to meet global demands
GLOBAL - By 2030 an additional 37 million tonnes of fish per year will be needed to maintain current levels of fish consumption for an expanded world population. Because traditional capture fisheries have reached their maximum production levels, fish farming represents the only way to fill the gap. But it will only do so if it is promoted and managed in a responsible fashion.

€11 billion deal seals SP buyout
NEW JERSEY - Schering-Plough Corporation has completed the acquisition of Organon BioSciences from Akzo Nobel. The deal has cost the company approximately Euro 11 billion in cash and creates the world's largest animal health organisation.
